KUGI HIJOS: Rising from the Foot of Kanlaon

March 25, 2026

How Kanlaon Hijos FC is Forging Fire, Faith, and Future in Philippine Football

There is a mountain in Negros that does not sleep.

It breathes.
It rumbles.
It reminds everyone who lives beneath it that strength is not quiet — it is earned.

At the foot of that mountain, in a city many maps barely highlight, a different kind of fire is rising.

Not from the earth —
but from the hearts of children chasing a ball across worn grass.

They call themselves the Sons of Kanlaon.

And they are learning how to rise.

Where It All Began: A Father, A Son, A Spark

In August 2012, there were no grand plans.

No academy blueprint.
No funding.
No promises of trophies.

Just a father— Abundio A. Lagahit Jr.  who wanted to support his six-year-old son’s love for football.

Together with Ruel Marcellana, they gathered a small group of boys and traveled to a football festival in nearby San Carlos City.

It was a simple trip.

But what they witnessed changed everything.

They saw confidence grow in shy children.
They saw teamwork form among strangers.
They saw discipline, joy, and purpose take shape in real time.

And in that moment, they made a decision that would echo for years:

Bring football home. Build something that lasts.

The Name That Carries a City

Canlaon City lives under the shadow of Mount Kanlaon, a symbol of power, endurance, and identity.

So when the club needed a name, they didn’t look far.

Kanlaon Hijos.

The Sons of Kanlaon.

A name that doesn’t just represent geography but a mindset.

Strong.
Resilient.
Unbreakable.

Just like the mountain that watches over them.

From Festival Team to Football Academy

What began as a one-time team quickly became a movement.

With support from parents and the Local Government Unit, Kanlaon Hijos started joining football festivals across Negros.

And then something remarkable happened.

They started winning.

Trophies came home.
Recognition followed.
More children showed up.

But inside the club, success was never defined by medals.

It was defined by growth.

Today, Kanlaon Hijos stands as a structured grassroots academy — training players from as young as four years old all the way to senior levels.

Six days a week.
Two hours a day.
Under sun, rain, and everything in between.

Because in Kanlaon, consistency is not optional.

It is identity.

“We Never Lose, We Only Learn”

Every great club has a philosophy.

Kanlaon Hijos has a belief.

“We never lose, we only learn.”

It is repeated in training.
It is lived in matches.
It is carried by every player who wears their colors.

Wins are celebrated but briefly.
Losses are studied but never feared.

Because here, football is not about avoiding failure.

It is about becoming stronger because of it.

Building More Than Players

Under the guidance of Coach Abundio Lagahit Jr., a certified Philippine Football Federation (PFF) C License coach, the club ensures that every session meets national development standards.

But more importantly, every session builds character.

Kanlaon Hijos is not just producing footballers.

They are shaping:

    • Leaders
    • Students
    • Dreamers

Girls’ football programs.
Futsal development.
School outreach initiatives.

This is not just expansion.

This is inclusion.

From Canlaon to the World Stage

Some stories begin in small cities.

But they are not meant to stay there.

Two daughters of Kanlaon—Chenny Dañoso and Pia Bolo—carried their journey beyond Negros.

From local fields to international arenas:

    • AFF U15 Women’s Championship – Thailand (2019)
    • AFF U19 Women’s Championship – Indonesia (2022)

They wore the Philippine badge.

And in doing so, they carried the spirit of Kanlaon with them.

Proof that greatness does not depend on where you start but on how far you’re willing to go.

Opportunities Beyond the Pitch

For many players, football became more than a passion.

It became a pathway.

Scholarships.
University opportunities.
A future once out of reach, now within grasp.

Today, Kanlaon Hijos Football Club proudly has players competing in UAAP schools, one of the most prestigious collegiate leagues in the Philippines.

From a small city at the foot of a volcano, to the biggest stages of student-athlete competition.

That is impact.

A Club Built by a Community

Behind every training session…
every tournament…
every victory…

Is a community that refuses to let the dream fade.

The LGU provides transportation and training spaces.
Parents volunteer time, effort, and sacrifice.

Because Kanlaon Hijos FC is not owned by one person.

It is carried by many.

Playing Without Barriers

In a country where access often limits opportunity, Kanlaon Hijos made a bold choice:

Football should be for everyone.

    • No membership fees
    • Free training programs
    • Open access for all children willing to learn

No child is turned away because of money.

Only one requirement matters: Heart.

Trials Beneath the Mountain

But even the strongest foundations face storms.

A recent typhoon damaged their football field, turning their training ground into a risk instead of a refuge.

Equipment is limited.
Tournament fees continue to rise.

And yet, they show up.

Every day.

Because for the Sons of Kanlaon, excuses are never stronger than purpose.

A Festival That United a City

In 2023, after the silence of the pandemic, Kanlaon Hijos Football Club brought football back to life.

They organized their biggest event yet: Fiesta Football Tournament

Over 50 teams.
Hundreds of players.
One united community.

It was more than a tournament.

It was a celebration of resilience.

A reminder that football in the Philippines is alive, and growing.

KUGI HIJOS: A Cry That Means More

When Kanlaon Hijos steps onto the pitch, one chant rises above the noise:

“KUGI HIJOS!”

It is not just a cheer.

It is identity.
It is pride.
It is a declaration:

We are here. We are strong. We will keep going.

The Next Chapter

The vision is clear.

More players in UAAP.
More national team call-ups.
More lives changed through football.

But beyond goals and milestones, one mission remains:

To keep the fire alive for the next generation.

Message to the Dreamers

Their message is simple—but powerful:

“Hard work and consistency is the way to success.”

And if you listen closely, you’ll realize,

that message is not just for players in Canlaon.

It is for every young Filipino footballer chasing a dream.

to a community-driven academy producing national players…

Kanlaon Hijos stands as a symbol of what Philippine football truly represents:

Heart. Hustle. Hope.

To the coaches.
To the parents.

Mabuhay ang grassroots football.
