Lapu-Lapu City Football Club: Courage in Their Boots, Humility in Their Hearts

There are places where football is played for trophies.

And there are places where football is played for something far greater.

In the quiet barangays of Lapu-Lapu City, where the sea breeze carries the sound of laughter and the thud of a football on grass, a group of young players gathers every weekend with determination in their eyes and dreams in their hearts.

Some arrive with worn-out boots.
Some arrive with borrowed jerseys.
Some arrive carrying burdens far heavier than their age.

But when the whistle blows, they are all the same.

They are footballers.

And this is where the story of Lapu-Lapu City Football Club begins.

A Club Built from the Spirit of Giving Back

Founded in 2022 in Tam-Isan, Sta. Rosa, Lapu-Lapu City, this Philippine football club was created with a mission that goes far beyond competition.

At the center of this vision is Head Coach Jesus Jumao-as, whose own journey in football shaped the heart of the club.

Before he became a coach, he was once a young player chasing opportunity.

A former varsity athlete at the University of the Visayas, a former PFF U23 Cebu Team player, and a former player for the Philippine Coast Guard Cebu, Coach Jesus understands firsthand the struggles faced by aspiring athletes who come from humble beginnings.

Football gave him a chance.

A chance to study.
A chance to build a future.
A chance to rise.

And so he made a decision that would eventually change the lives of many young players.

He would give that same chance to others.

“I started this club to help charity players expose their talents. I came from charity too and I used my talent to study in college.”

For Coach Jesus, building a football club was never about building a team.

It was about building opportunities.

Inspired by the Warrior of Mactan

The club’s name carries deep meaning.

Lapu-Lapu City Football Club draws inspiration from the legendary Filipino hero Lapu-Lapu, the warrior who defended his land with courage and dignity.

But for this club, bravery is not measured in battles.

It is measured in character.

Their identity is built on two powerful values:

Brave and Humble.

Players are taught to compete fiercely on the field, yet remain grounded in respect and discipline.

Their motto reflects this philosophy perfectly:

“Being humble is the answer to every bully we face — the answer is none.”

It is a reminder that true strength is not loud.

True strength is calm, disciplined, and respectful.

Developing the Next Generation

What started as a small community program is now growing into a structured grassroots development system.

Today, Lapu-Lapu City FC trains players across multiple age groups:

    • Under 10 (7–10 years old)
    • Under 13 (11–13 years old)
    • Under 16 (14–16 years old)
    • 17 and above

Training sessions take place every Saturday and Sunday — even during holidays.

Because here, consistency matters.

Every drill is a lesson.
Every match is a classroom.
Every mistake is an opportunity to grow.

The club’s coaching philosophy centers on four pillars:

    • Strong technical foundations
    • Inclusive participation
    • Long-term player development
    • Character formation

Winning is important.

But who the players become matters even more.

Rising Through Competition

Despite being only a young club, Lapu-Lapu City Football Club has already begun making its presence felt across Cebu and regional tournaments.

Among their proudest achievements:

🏆 TFOE Eagles 2023 – U9 Champions
🏆 TFOE Eagles 2023 – U19 Champions
🏆 SRB Football Festival 2023 – U9 Champions
🏆 SRB Football Festival 2024 – U9 Champions
🏆 Fr. Zagu Tournament 2024 – U12 Champions
🏆 Hermanos Football Tournament 2023 – Men’s Open Champions

The club has also competed in major tournaments including:

    • Sinulog Cup
    • Aboitiz Cup
    • Thirsty Cup
    • PFF U19 Qualifiers
    • Lapu-Lapu City Fiesta League
    • Sugbu Calidad Football Tournament

Even more encouraging, several players have already advanced to higher levels such as:

    • PFF U19 category
    • PFF Women’s U17 team

Proof that grassroots football, when nurtured properly, can open real pathways for Filipino talent.

When Football Becomes a Lifeline

But trophies are not the true measure of this club.

The real victories happen far from the scoreboard.

For many young players, Lapu-Lapu City Football Club is more than a team.

It is a second home.

The club provides:

    • Free training opportunities for underprivileged youth
    • Scholarships for deserving players
    • Programs for girls and women
    • Community outreach clinics
    • Mentorship programs focused on discipline and respect

Parents, schools, and the Lapu-Lapu City LGU and Sports Commission have become vital partners in this mission.

Together, they are building something bigger than a football program.

They are building a community movement.

The Struggles Behind the Dream

Yet like many grassroots football clubs across the Philippines, the journey is not without obstacles.

Some players travel long distances from island communities just to attend training.

The club constantly works to provide support for:

    • Transportation costs
    • Tournament registration fees
    •  Football kits and jerseys
    • Food and accommodation during competitions

Sometimes the biggest challenge is as simple as making sure every player has proper boots.

But every sacrifice is worth it.

Because sometimes, one opportunity can change an entire life.

The Moment That Meant Everything

Among all their achievements, one memory stands out for the club.

A group of parents approached the coaching staff after training.

They did not talk about wins.

They did not talk about trophies.

They simply said thank you.

Thank you for guiding their children.

Thank you for giving them a community.

Thank you for treating them like family.

That moment reminded Coach Jesus why the club exists.

Not just to develop footballers.

But to build futures.

The Vision Ahead

The dreams of Lapu-Lapu City Football Club continue to grow.

Over the next three years, the club aims to:

    • Build a fully structured academy from U8 to U20
    •  Establish partnerships with professional clubs
    • Support players in obtaining college scholarships
    • Expand programs for girls and underserved youth
    •  Launch a senior women’s team
    • Achieve consistent success in regional competitions
    •  Create sustainable funding for grassroots development

Their ambition is clear:

To become one of the leading community-based football clubs in Cebu and the Philippines.

A Message to Young Dreamers

Coach Jesus leaves aspiring footballers with a simple but powerful reminder:

Every great player started exactly where you are now — with a ball at your feet and a dream in your heart.

Work hard.

Respect your coaches, teammates, and opponents.

Learn from mistakes.

Believe in your team.

And most importantly— never forget why you fell in love with the game.

The Spirit of Philippine Football

Lapu-Lapu City Football Club represents the true heartbeat of grassroots football in the Philippines.

Not fame.

Not money.

But something far more powerful.

Opportunity.
Discipline.
Humility.
Community.
Hope.

The club may still be young.

But its impact is already being felt across the football community of Cebu.

And if bravery and humility continue to guide their path, the future ahead is not just promising—

It is unstoppable.
